Helston come from behind to beat Penryn

Helston travelled to Penryn on Tuesday evening and despite being 1-3 down they recovered to come away with a 4-3 victory.

On an excellent pitch, where some good football was played, goals from Liam Eddy, an excellent 30yard screamer from Bryan Hawke, Kayne Trevaskis and Steve Hawke saw them overcome a battling Penryn team to keep them in the hunt for the runner-up spot (however distant!).

As I could not get to see the game I would be grateful if someone could post the team (and subs) on the Forum so that I can update the Stats.

As I will also miss the last game of the season against St Agnes, (due to ex-Helston and now Porthleven player Chris Strike's marriage to Lucy Russell - and congratulations to both!), would someone post the stats for that game also.

 Porthleven achieve 'Double' over Helston

In a fairly poor game at Porthleven with two poor defences, it looked as though it should have had plenty of goals but, it was not to be as neither team could convert the many chances created.

Porthleven were quick out of the blocks and the speed of their two wide players with players in the middle showed the frailties of having only three at the back, Port certainly had the better of the first 20 minutes before the Blues could settle.  It was in this period though that a high bouncing ball resulted in the Port keeper Mark Thomas and Helston's Liam Eddy colliding in mid-air with Thomas bouncing off Eddy and falling to the ground and banging his head. The game restarted a good five minutes later when the keeper had recovered. The opening goal came on 25mins when, from a Helston corner, Dom Pullen rose to glance the ball into the net. Ten minutes later the game was level when following a cross fro the right into the visitors area the ball was headed out to the edge of the box where a half-volley from Jason Robertson screamed through players into the back of the net. Only a minute later and Port were 2-1 up when a penalty was awarded against Alex Sharkey and Robertson stepped up to record his second of the game. Tackles were flying in from both sides especially in midfield with one or two players being spoken to and yellow carded but  good  football was scarce and no more chances were capitalised on.

The second half was a fairly even contest with both teams having spells of pressure with chances being created and missed. Helston were committed to attack to reduce the deficit and Port were using the wide men in their counter attacking moves. Defensive mistakes were still being made by both teams but still no further scoring. The last fifteen minutes saw Helston pressuring Port but it was on a break down the left, in the 90th minute, when a Justin Miles mis-timed tackle gave Robertson a chance for his third with another penalty. Unfortunately for him it was saved by Barry Hennessey and a shot from the rebound was cleared off the line by Chris Breasley.  No further chances and the game ended in a win for Porthleven.

With Perranwell going down 3-1 to Newquay and Truro winning, it is as you were at the top of the table, and, with games running out it is looking difficult for Helston to finish runners-up. Still possible though!!

Helston Win With Last Kick of the Game

Dom Pullen's goals in the 20th and 93rd minutes of the game secured victory over Falmouth Town on Tuesday evening after going behind in the 3rd min.

                 (Match summary to follow)

Helston beaten at home by Penryn

Helston were beaten 3-2 by Penryn at Kellaway Park and, looking at the games that Helston and Perranwell have remaining, it will be a hard task for the Blues to finish as League runners-up.

It was an even first 20 minutes with chances at both ends before the home team began to continually pressure the Penryn defence. Several opportunities were created but a lack of composure in front of goal brought no end result. After 40 minutes and against the run of play, a defensive mix-up gifted the visitors the opening goal. In the second half Penryn looked far more positive than Helston and in the 50th minute the Blues were two down. For the next 20 minutes the visitors looked the much better team and it was no surprise when they made it 3-0. It seemed as though this goal gave the home team a  proverbial 'kick up the backside' and the determination of the players became evident. Two goals in the next four minutes by Stevie Hawke and Liam Eddy reduced the deficit to one and when the Blues were awarded a penalty with ten minutes to go, it looked as though they could go on to win the game. Unfortunately, the usually reliable Dom Pullen had his spot kick saved. Despite a few half chances in the remaining minutes the score remained at 3-2 for the visitors.

For the neutral it was probably an entertaining game despite having a referee who wanted to be the star of the show and made some decisions which confused both the team managers.
